Three Score In Double Figures In WBB MAC Opener
December 02, 2020 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Despite a strong opening half and three players scoring in double figures, the Ball State women's basketball team opened Mid-American Conference play with a 77-58 loss to Eastern Michigan Wednesday night at Worthen Arena. Junior Thelma Dis Agustsdottir led the trio with 14 points.
In his ninth league opener as the Cardinals (0-3; 0-1 MAC) head coach, it should come as no surprise that Brady Sallee's team came to play in the opening minutes of its 2020-21 #MACtion opener, which came a month earlier than typical due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The teams were neck and neck for the first 20 minutes of action which consisted of four lead changes and seven ties. Ball State led by as much as seven late in the first period, following Agustsdottir's second made three of the contest with 3:51 remaining in the period.
Agustsdottir would lead the Cardinals with 10 points at the half, after going 2-of-3 from behind the arc, while Eastern Michigan held a slight edge on the scoreboard at 33-31.
The second half depicted another turn of events, unfortunately, as the Eagles (2-1; 1-0 MAC) turned up their defense pressure and forced the Cardinals to turn the ball over. Eastern Michigan capitalized by out-scoring the Cardinals 44-27 over the final 20 minutes, including tallying 15 points off turnovers forcing Sallee to say after the game; "We got out-toughed and we turned the ball over."
Tonight's game plan was to stop the Eagles from scoring in the paint, but Sallee continued to explain how EMU beat the Cardinals in that category (42-18), along with second chance points (14-1) and in fast break points (12-0). "You're never ever ever going to win a game playing like that."
Despite the loss, newcomer Essence Booker made a strong presence on the court by scoring a season-high 12 points. Sophomore teammate Sydney Freeman closed out the game with 11 points, while junior Blake Smith led the defensive effort by pulling down nine rebounds.
Sallee closed out his opening comment by saying; "we continue to face adversity this season. The team has learned a lot about themselves, but they need to start doing something about it."
The Ball State women's basketball team will play its third game in one week when it plays at Western Kentucky Saturday in E.A. Diddle Arena. The game is scheduled too tipoff at 3 p.m. ET | 2 p.m. CT. The Cardinals will return to Mid-American Conference action on Dec. 20 at Akron.
