MAC Announces Field Hockey Spring Schedule
October 11, 2020 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team learned Tuesday that its highly anticipated 2020-21 spring schedule will consist of two games against all six Mid-American Conference opponents.
"We are grateful to the Mid-American conference for all the effort put into planning our competitive season," Ball State head coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "We have been looking forward to MAC competition for a long time. The student-athletes have displayed great discipline and commitment during this period of so many unknowns. They are hungry and the growth they have displayed will certainly payoff when we take the field in March."
The Cardinals' quest for a MAC title begins March 12-13, 2021, with back-to-back games at Appalachian State. The following weekend, Ball State opens its home slate against Ohio (March 19-20) at the Briner Sports Complex.
The last time Ball State hosted the Bobcats, senior Rachel Pereira connected for the game-winning goal in double overtime to give the Cardinals a 3-2 victory on Oct. 5, 2018.
Ball State will remain home March 26-27 when it welcomes Longwood to Muncie. Last season, Pereira saved the day with another game-winner to push the Cardinals past the Lancers 2-1 in overtime on Oct. 25, 2019, in Farmville, Virginia.
The Cardinals will host Bellarmine an incoming MAC member in 2021-22 during its bye week the weekend of April 2-3 before returning to action at Kent State (April 9-10) and at Central Michigan (April 16-17). The Cardinals wrap up spring action at home when they face league rival Miami (April 23-24).
The league's regular season champion will earn an automatic bid into the 12-team NCAA Championships, with semifinals and finals scheduled for May 7-9.
Times for all contest will be release at a later date.
The Mid-American Conference announced in May that it was eliminating postseason tournaments in eight sports, including field hockey. The league office made the decision in early August to postpone field hockey along with other scheduled fall contests, as well as MAC championships, due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. In late September, the NCAA DI Council approved moving all fall championships to the spring and set the spring field hockey start date for Feb. 12 with the regular season concluding April 23.
