Three Football Cardinals to Showcase Skills at Upcoming All-Star Games
January 09, 2020 | Football
MUNCIE, Ind. – Only a select few collegiate football players who compete at the Division I level get the opportunity to continue playing at the professional ranks. Three Ball State players who completed their eligibility this fall hope to impress pro scouts with their skills at a pair of upcoming all-star games.
Running back Walter Fletcher will suit up in the FBS SPIRAL Tropical Bowl on Sunday, Jan. 12. Meanwhile, offensive lineman Danny Pinter and safety Ray Wilborn have accepted invitations to play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl on Saturday, Jan. 18.
Fletcher was only on the Ball State roster for one year, but he made quite an impact for the Cardinals in 2019. The native of Columbia, Maryland, finished second on the team in carries (132) and rushing yards (726). His rushing average of 5.5 yards per carry was the second best by a Ball State running back with at least 100 carries dating back to 2000.
The Tropical Bowl will be streamed live from Daytona Beach, Florida, via FloSports (click here) on Jan. 12 beginning at 10 a.m. More than 100 Tropical Bowl alumni have gone on to play in the NFL since the game's inception in 2016.
Pinter, hailing from South Bend, Indiana, anchored Ball State's offensive line at right tackle the last two years after making the transition from tight end following his sophomore campaign. He was one of four Cardinals to earn first team all-conference accolades this season.
Wilborn played outside linebacker and safety in his two years wearing cardinal and white. The native of Lansing, Michigan, led the Cardinals in tackles (83) and tackles for loss (10.5) in 2018. He was a consistent force on defense again in 2019 as he recorded at least seven tackles in eight of the 12 contests.
The Collegiate Bowl will be played at the historic Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. This year's game will air on the NFL Network on Jan. 18 beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
Ball State concluded the 2019 season 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the Mid-American Conference. The Cardinals won the Bronze Stalk Trophy from Northern Illinois for the first time since 2008 and capped the year by knocking off MAC champion Miami for the Red Bird Rivalry Trophy, 41-27. Ball State led the conference in scoring (34.8 points per game) and total offense (463.0 yards per game). BSU's defense tallied 24 turnovers, which ranked 15th nationally.
Ball State opens the 2020 season on Thursday, Sept. 3 with a home game against Maine.
