Men’s Tennis Takes 6-1 Road Win At Xavier
January 18, 2020 | Men's Tennis
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cardinals started the match off strong at Xavier tonight by taking the early 1-0 lead over the Musketeers after winning the doubles point. Ball State built off of its momentum in singles play to earn the 6-1 victory over the Xavier Saturday night at the Eastern Hills Indoor Tennis Club. This marks the fourth-straight season the Cardinals (1-1) have defeated the Musketeers (0-1).
The doubles competition started out a little shaky for Ball State. The No. 3 Xavier duo of Matthew Graft and Shashank Reddy were the first twosome off the court. Ball State rebounded quickly, as Danilo Kovacevic alongside his doubles partner Parrish Simmons would take down Michael Lee and Jan Vrba 6-2 to even the score. Shortly after, BSU's top team of Chris Adams and Vince Orlando would help BSU take the doubles point from Xavier after their 6-4 defeat over Brett Winters and Srdan Pejic.
In singles action, Orlando won his match fairly quickly in straight sets at the No. 4 slot over Jan Vrba, 6-1, 6-1. Eli Herran pushed Ball State's lead to 3-0 at the No. 6 position after beating Lee, 6-1, 6-2. A three-set thriller from Thibault De Negri clinched match point for Ball State at the No. 3 spot. Both Adams and Simmons rounded out today's wins for Ball State. Adams won a two-set tiebreaker while Simmons was the last match off the court after coming back in the third frame to beat Aaron Thompson, 7-6 (7-5).
The Ball State men's tennis team will play a double bill in East Lansing, Mich. next Saturday. The Cardinals will first face the Spartans at 10 a.m. and then will close out the day against Niagara University at 2 p.m.
