Field Hockey Shuts Out Saint Louis 3-0 In Home Opener

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team (2-2) registered its second shutout of the season after the Cardinals defeated Saint Louis (0-3) by a score of 3-0 Friday afternoon at the Briner Sports Complex.
For the third-straight contest, junior Sierra Jefferson put Ball State on the board first after converting a goal off of the assist from classmate Abby Ferenczy. After that, the Cardinals continued their offensive attack, playing aggressively against the Billikens the remainder of the first half.
In the second frame, redshirt senior Michelle Shampton collected her second goal of the season and 11th of her career off of a penalty corner, the assists came from junior Jenna McKune and redshirt junior Rachel Pereira.
Shortly after, freshman Angel Nkosi collected her first score of her career for the Cardinals which was again off of a penalty corner after Pereira and McKune set Nkosi up for success off of the double assist.
The Cardinals keep improving their defensive ways in each game that they play and today proved it. Ball State managed to stop Saint Louis from connecting with the cage on four different occasions. Both of Ball State's goalies, freshman Wietske Overdijkink who improved to 2-0 on the season had some diving saves, as did senior Alison McMullen who saw action in the final quarter for the Cardinals. Prereira also registered a defensive save for Ball State.
The Ball State field hockey team will wrap up its three-game week when it travels to Big Ten foe Indiana Sunday for a 1 p.m. start. The Cardinals and the Hoosiers faced each other earlier this season in a scrimmage at the Briner Sports Complex.
