MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team (1-1) will play three opponents in three different locations this week in non-conference action: UC Davis (Sept. 5 in East Lansing, MIch.), Saint Louis (Sept. 6 in Muncie) and Indiana (Sept. 8 in Bloomington).Â
"We get three very different opponents this week," Ball State head field hockey coach Stephanie Bernthal said. "The team has showed a great ability to respond to different tactical gameplans so far this season, and I am looking forward to seeing how we execute in such a short timespan. We continue to grow and gel as a team with each training, which is really exciting to see. The goal is to take steps forward in different areas of our game in each match this weekend and of course come out on top. Playing back to back with such a short turnaround last weekend showed that we can battle—it's a testament to the shift in culture of summer preparation by this squad, and I am thrilled about that. They are focused and determined."
First up for Ball State will be a neutral site game against UC Davis on the campus of Michigan State University. The game will begin at 1 p.m. in East Lansing, Mich. The last meeting between the two schools was last season at the Briner Sports Complex. It was a tight game, but the Cardinals fell in overtime by a score of 5-4. The Aggies enter Thursday's contest with a 1-0 record after defeating Quinnipiac last Sunday.
The Cardinals will host Saint Louis Friday, Sept. 6 in their home opener. The game will begin at 3 p.m. at the Briner Sports Complex. The last time Ball State faced the Billikens was in 2017, a 5-0 BSU win in Muncie. Saint Louis comes to Ball State with an overall record of 0-2 on the season.
Ball State closes its three-game week with a contest at Big Ten foe Indiana. The Cardinals recently hosted the Hoosiers for a scrimmage on August 23 with redshirt senior Michelle Shampton scoring a goal but the Hoosiers went on to win, 4-1. The last time the Cardinals defeated Indiana was in 2012 when the Hoosiers played in Muncie.  Ball State won that contest by a score of 3-2. The Hoosiers have won the last three contests over Ball State.
