Cards Collect 11-3 Scout Day Win Over Butler
September 28, 2019 | Baseball
Coming off a 38-19 season, Ball State started its march toward a league championship with an 11-3 exhibition win over Butler on Saturday afternoon. The day served as a showcase for pro scouts in attendance and included 60-meter dashes in the morning followed by a 12-inning game.
Justin Conant, an all-star in the Midwest Collegiate League in the offseason, continued his improvement as he went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks. Ryan Pelter had two hits and Mack Murphy tripled as the Cardinals pounded out 14 hits on the day.Â
"We've got an experienced team and that helps," head coach Rich Maloney said. "We have a long way to go because there's a lot of competition, which is good and healthy. We need some guys to step up and take jobs. Overall, we're in a good place. Our culture is good. We're a team. I'm very, very pleased."
Ball State, which defeated Butler 12-4 last April, scored six times in the bottom of the 5th. Eight Cardinals pitchers combined to hold the visitors from Indianapolis to just six hits while striking out 18. Newcomer Tyler Ruetschle pitched three innings and struck out five while Lukas Jaksich retired seven of the eight batters he faced.
Ball State has two more exhibition dates left at Ball Diamond this fall. The Cardinals play a club from Canada Thursday, Oct. 3 at 3:30 p.m. The last fall game is Sunday, Oct. 20 at noon.
