Sec Wins Title Match At Purdue Fall Invite
September 22, 2019 | Women's Tennis
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Ball State women's tennis team wrapped up its first fall tournament Sunday afternoon at the Purdue Invite.
Junior Victoria Sec won her respective flight as she only gave up four points total to Uconn's Elizabeth Kozyi, winning the match by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
The Cardinals opened play successfully Friday, after winning five singles matches and three doubles competitions. Newcomers Jessica Braun and Amy Kaplan earned straight set victories over their respective opponents in their college debuts while fellow freshman Emma Peeler took a three set thriller over DePaul's Marija Jovicic.
Victoria Sec paired up with Kaplan for an 8-6 doubles victory over Bowling Green's Ayumi Sasaki and Yulia Kapitanova. Braun alongside teammate Rebecca Herrington took down Eastern Michigan's duo of Julia Piatek and Vasavi Ganesan, 8-4. Rounding out Friday's doubles wins for the Cardinals, were Livia Lukacs and Peeler with their 8-5 victory over Northern Illinois' Lara Slisko and Fernanda Naves.
Sec along with Braun both made it to the championship match of their respective flights after earning semifinal victories on Saturday.
Along with Sec's singles win on Sunday, Lukacs closed out the invitational with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat over Liza Diachenko of Lipscomb.
The Ball State women's tennis team continues fall action when it hosts the Bethany Moore Invite (Oct. 4-5) named in honor of 2016 graduate Bethany Moore who helped Ball State to that year's MAC championship and the program's first NCAA Tournament berth. Moore tragically lost her life after a 2017 car accident in Hamilton County. The Cardinals dedicated a bench in her honor last spring at Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
