Ball State Honors Seniors, Beats Purdue Fort Wayne 4-0
September 20, 2019 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State University soccer team rebounded from consecutive losses in a big way by defeating Purdue Fort Wayne, 4-0, Friday night at Briner Sports Complex.
The Cardinals moved to 6-2-0 on the season while the Mastodons dropped to 3-2-2. Ball State also honored seniors Peighton Cook, Sam Kambol, Julia Elvbo, Yela Ziswiler and Kyrie Seying in a ceremony prior to the match.
"It was a great performance by the ladies today," said Ball State head coach Josh Rife. "We knew it was going to be a tough game, and to respond how we did after a tough road trip was great. It was nice to honor our seniors tonight and give them this game, but we still have a lot of unfinished business as we head into conference play. Every game is going to be tough."
Ball State struck quickly as Cook celebrated her senior day in style with the game-winning goal in just the 6th minute of the match. Fellow senior Elvbo, along with Tatiana Mason, was credited with an assist on the play. Not long after, the Cardinals scored again when Nicky Potts secured the ball inside the penalty area and found the back of the net off a pass from Kerrigan Johnson. The 2-0 lead would hold until halftime.
The Cardinals seemed content to protect their lead for the majority of the second half, but Tatiana Hawkins-Dabney scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season when Melissa Diceman found her streaking down the sideline in the 75th minute. Claudia Como then scored the first goal of her career in the 87th minute to put the finishing touches on a dominant performance. Mason was credited with her second assist of the night on Como's goal.
Sophomore Alex DeRuvo made the first start of her Ball State career and recorded the clean-sheet victory. She faced two shots on goal on the night and saved both. The Cardinals compiled 17 shots as a team with eight on goal while holding Purdue Fort Wayne to six total shots.
The Cardinals have a week to prepare for Mid-American Conference play as they stay at home for the league opener against Central Michigan on Friday, September 27. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. ET with the match being broadcast live on ESPN3.
