CJ Jones’ 68 paces Cardinals to 11-shot lead with one round to play in Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- The Ball State men's golf team backed up its lowest under-par score in a decade with another low round Monday to stretch its lead to double digits at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
The Cardinals recorded a score of 281 (-7) in the second round behind three players in red figures for the second straight day. CJ Jones led the way with a 4-under 68, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 sixth hole on the Donald Ross Course at Cedar Rapids Country Club.
Ball State entered the day with a four-shot lead over tournament host Iowa and finished it 11 shots clear of defending champion Arkansas State, which jumped to second place. The Cardinals own the two lowest rounds of the tournament so far.
Keegan Bronnenberg (70) and Joey Ranieri (71) were under par for the Cardinals for the second day in a row. Bronnenberg, who owns 10 birdies through two rounds, played the opening nine in 4 under par for the second straight day. Ranieri has made just one bogey through the event's first 36 holes.
Those two BSU players are tied for third place at 5 under par, four strokes behind Illinois State's David Perkins. Jones (-3) is tied for sixth place, while Yianni Kostouros (even) is tied for 19th.
Jack Cunningham was Ball State's fourth counter Monday with an even-par 72 for a solid bounce back performance in a field featuring seven top-100 teams from a year ago.
The tournament champion will be crowned at the conclusion of Tuesday's final round. Live scoring is available at golfstat.com.
