Shampton’s Goal Not Enough For Field Hockey In Loss To No. 19 Rutgers
August 31, 2019 | Field Hockey
PISCATAWAY, N. J. - Redshirt senior Michelle Shampton scored the lone goal for the Cardinals this afternoon but it wasn't enough, as Ball State would drop its season opener by a score of 4-1 at No. 19 Rutgers Saturday at the Bauer Track/Field Hockey Complex.
Shampton continues to be a strong asset to the Cardinals offensively, scoring her first goal of the season off of a carry in shot from the right side of the Rutgers goalie which occurred at the 28:48 mark in the second quarter of play. Unfortunately, that would be the lone goal for Ball State. Shampton is off to a good start though, as she led the Cardinals offensively last season with five goals.
Despite the loss, it was an excellent effort by the Cardinals defense in today's game as Ball State had a total of eight saves which was led by junior goal keeper Grace Chavez with five. Shampton, freshman Angel Nkosi and seniors Rachel Pereira along with classmate Arantxa Rosainz Caloca also notched defensive saves against the Scarlet Knights.
The Ball State field hockey team continues its two-game road swing when it travels to the University of Delaware Sunday for a neutral site match-up against Davidson beginning at noon.
