Field Hockey Shuts Out Davidson For First Win Of The Season
September 01, 2019 | Field Hockey
NEWARK, Del. - The Ball State field hockey team closed out its weekend play on a high note after shutting out Davidson for the 1-0 win Sunday afternoon at Fred P. Rullo Stadium. With the victory, the Cardinals improve their overall record to 1-1 on the season.
Â
Both teams went scoreless after the first 15 minutes of play. The defense for both schools' continued up until the second frame of action, that's when redshirt junior Sierra Jefferson put the Cardinals on the board with a shot up the middle off of the assist from junior Abby Ferenczy. After Jefferson's goal, the Cardinals took the 1-0 lead over Davidson and held on remainder of the contest for the victory.
Â
Second-year head coach Stephanie Bernthal recently said that this weekend would present a great opportunity for the team to rise to the occasion against two quality opponents and the Cardinals did just that, especially today on both sides of the ball.
Â
Offensively, the Cardinals got off eight shots with Jefferson leading the way with four. On the defensive side of the ball, freshman goalie Wietske Overdijkink had two saves while redshirt junior Rachel Pereira also collected a defensive save against Davidson.
Â
The Ball State field hockey team continues on the road for its third straight game when it travels to East Lansing, Mich. Thursday to take on UC Davis in a neutral site contest. After that, the Cardinals return to Briner Sports Complex for their home opener against Saint Louis Friday at 3 p.m.Â
