Volleyball Programs Help AVCA Set Record for Academic Success
July 22, 2019 | Men's Volleyball, Women's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. - - The Ball State men's and women's volleyball programs were part of a record 1,125 teams to earn the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2018-2019 season. The previous record was 977 set last year.
Â
The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball programs which display excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.
Â
On the women's side, the Cardinals finished the academic year with a 3.653 GPA led by perfect 4.0 averages from senior Emily Holland and junior Amber Seaman. In addition, junior Kate Avila and sophomore Ali Finch earned 4.0 GPAs for the fall semester, while seniors Avery Devoe and Ellie Dunn tallied 4.0 GPAs in the spring semester. Ball State's team GPA ranked in the top 25 of the 189 NCAA Division I women's programs which earned the award.
Â
"Our program finished the academic year with a 3.653 GPA, and it's such a great feeling as a coach to work with a group that is so committed to being the complete student-athlete," women's head coach Kelli Miller Phillips said. "They not only performed at a high level in the classroom, but on the court as well by winning our second consecutive MAC West Division championship. These accomplishments take a collective effort and I'm very proud of them for their hard work and dedication."
Â
On the men's side, the Cardinals finished the academic year with a 3.401 GPA led by a 3.967 mark from sophomore Will Hippe. In addition, senior Parker Swartz earned a 4.00 GPA in graduate work over the academic year and joined Hippe with an unblemished GPA for the fall semester. Junior Nick LaVanchy, senior Lemuel Turner and senior Adam Wessel earned 4.0 GPAs for the spring semester.
Â
"I'm proud of our team's effort in the classroom," men's head coach Joel Walton said. "Our players realize the importance of their education and they work hard to achieve academically. Ball State's athletic department has many strong students. Earning the AVCA Team Academic award for the fourth consecutive year and having the highest men's team GPA in the department this year are both stellar accomplishments."
