Diamond Head Bracket Change: Cards to Open with Washington

Event will be held Christmas Week in Honolulu
MUNCIE, Ind. -- The bracket has been adjusted for the 2019 Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, and the Ball State men's basketball team will now open against defending Pac-12 regular season champion Washington.
The Cardinals were originally scheduled to face host school Hawaii in the first round. ESPN Events made the change to address scheduling concerns involving the non-bracketed games prior to the start of the event (Ball State at Georgia Tech and UTEP at Houston).
Ball State will meet Washington in the third game of the tournament's opening day, Sunday, Dec. 22. The game will tip at 4:30 p.m. HT (10:30 ET) on ESPN2 from the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. The Huskies went 27-9 (15-3 Pac-12) a year ago and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament.
The other matchup in Ball State's half of the bracket will now pit UTEP and Hawaii. The other half of the bracket still features Houston versus Portland and Georgia Tech versus Boise State.
The Diamond Head Classic includes 12 games over four days, with an off-day Tuesday, culminating with the final games on Christmas day. The entire tournament will air on either ESPN2 or ESPNU.
In addition to the games in Hawaii, the tournament contract also calls for Ball State to visit Georgia Tech in a non-bracketed game on Dec. 18.
The senior quartet of Tahjai Teague, K.J. Walton, Kyle Mallers and Josh Thompson will lead Ball State in head coach James Whitford's seventh season. The Cardinals will feature six new faces on the floor with the addition of three true freshmen and three redshirts from last season. The team got a head start on the season last week with a trip to Costa Rica, where the Cardinals went 3-0.
