Home Runs Carry Softball To Saturday Sweep in Fort Wayne
May 04, 2019 | Softball
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - - The Ball State softball team did plenty of damage Saturday afternoon at the Purdue Fort Wayne Softball Field, blasting six total home runs to finish the regular season with a two-game non-conference sweep.
In the opener, it was sophomore right fielder Kendall Fields who guided the Cardinals (34-18) to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over the host Mastodons (9-37), as she blasted two-run home runs in both the second and fourth innings.
In the nightcap, sophomore third baseman Stacy Payton took over, blasting three home runs in the game to drive in eight of BSU's runs in a 10-0 (5) victory over Oakland. She deposited a two-run blast in the first inning, her first career grand slam in the second and another two-run shot in the fourth.
Payton was not the only Cardinal to go yard against the Golden Grizzlies (17-31), however, as Fields added her third two-run shot of the day in the four-run first inning.
All 14 of Ball State's runs over the two games came via the long ball with Fields driving in six runs and Payton brining home eight.
Aside from the big blasts, the Cardinals received solid performances from all five members of its pitching staff, including a combined no-hitter from senior Aeshia Miles and redshirt sophomore Darcie Huber in the nightcap.
In the opening game victory, freshman Tieghan Morio earned the win to improve to 6-2 on the season after limiting the Mastodons to five hits and three runs, only two of which were earned, over 4.1 innings of work. She also tallied five strikeouts.
Freshman Sarah Venker followed, throwing the next 2.1 innings and holding the hosts to three hits while striking out three more batters. Finally, junior Alyssa Rothwell entered for the final out, striking out the second batter she faced to pick up her 14th save of the year.
In the circle versus Oakland, Miles earned the win to improve to 7-9 on the season after striking out three of the 12 batters she faced over the first three innings. Huber came in and shut the Golden Grizzlies down over the final two innings, striking out three of the seven batters she faced.
In addition to the home runs, Payton added a single in the opener to finish the day 4-for-6. Fields went 3-for-4 on the day and added a walk.
Freshman infielder Amaia Daniel added a double in each contest, while junior designated player Janae Hogg and sophomore shortstop Hailey Demnianiuk each recorded a pair of hits versus Oakland.
The Ball State softball team returns to action Wednesday, when it opens play in the 2019 Mid-American Conference tournament. Game time and an opponent will be announced once the tournament field is set later this weekend.
