
Kyle Mallers, Austin Nehls Named to Academic All-MAC Team

MUNCIE, Ind. -- Ball State senior guard Austin Nehls and junior forward Kyle Mallers earned recognition on the 2019 Academic All-MAC Team for men's basketball.

Mallers made the team for the second straight year, while Nehls garnered the recognition in his lone season for the Cardinals as a graduate transfer.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of his team's contests. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year are not eligible.

Nehls managed a 4.0 GPA during the fall semester in Ball State's MBA program. The Tucson, Arizona, native graduated in three years from Central Connecticut State with a 3.94 GPA and joined the Cardinals for his final season of eligibility. He was a two-time Academic All-District selection at CCSU.

Nehls played in 28 games and made three starts this season, shooting 40 percent from 3-point range and 87.5 percent from the free throw line. For his entire college career, he scored more than 1,100 points.

Mallers owns a 3.60 GPA in Ball State's finance program. He was twice named the MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week this season for the combination of his academic and athletic success.

The Fort Wayne product started all but the Cardinals' Senior Night contest, averaging 7.2 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. He shot 85.4 percent from the free throw line and is now an 84.4 percent foul shooter for his career.
