MAC team competing in eighth annual USA Basketball Men’s 3x3 National Championship
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Tayler Persons and his MAC 3-on-3 hoopsters are getting the band back together this week. The squad is headed to Las Vegas to compete Friday and Saturday in the USA Basketball Men's 3x3 National Championship.Â
Â
The MAC finished third out of 32 teams at the Dos Equis 3X3U National Championship earlier this month. It was selected, along with the Southland Conference, to represent that event at this week's championship, which doubles as 3x3 national team trials.
Â
Persons will again suit up with Central Michigan's Larry Austin Jr., Toledo's Jaelan Sanford and Kent State's Jaylin Walker, this time at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center. The BSU senior hit a pair of game-winners during the team's run to the semifinals of the Dos Equis event at the Mall of America in Minneapolis and then added another in the third-place game.
Â
The MAC squad has no time to get its feet wet this week, drawing defending champion Ariel Slow & Steady and former Purdue star Robbie Hummel in the first of its four pool play games. The top four squads from a trio of five-team pools will advance to the knockout rounds Saturday evening. The title game will stream online at usab.com/live Sunday at 1:20 a.m. ET.
Â
A three-time All-MAC selection, Persons racked up nearly 2,000 points and more than 500 assists for his collegiate career. Despite playing only his final three seasons at Ball State, he ranks ninth in school history in points (1,558) and third in assists (447). The Kokomo, Indiana, product started all 99 games of his BSU career.
Â
The USA 3x3 Nationals is free and open to the public. It will be held for the first time outdoors and for the first time outside of Colorado Springs.Â
Â
All athletes competing will be in consideration for selection to the 2019 USA Men's World Cup and 2019 USA Men's Pan American Games 3x3 teams. The 3x3 version of basketball will debut at the Olympics in 2020.
Â
The game is played on a half court with a 10-minute clock and a 12-second shot clock. The first team to 21 points or the team in the lead at the end of regulation is the winner.
