Men's Tennis Suffers 6-1 Loss In Non-Conference Play Against Butler
April 03, 2019 | Men's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team (10-11) suffered a 6-1 loss in mid-week non-conference action to Butler (16-6) Wednesday afternoon at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
It was quite the battle in doubles play today, as the Cardinals fell behind early to the Bulldogs, losing on court one first by a score of 6-1. Positions two and three were both down significantly at the start of their respective matches but managed to fight their way back to put themselves back into winning positions.
At two, sophomore Thibault de Negri alongside senior Tom Carney, were trailing the Bulldogs Adrian Mag and Aviv Ben Shabat, 3-5. The duo then won four straight games to take the match from Butler, 7-5. Sophomore Chris Adams and senior Conner Andersen fell behind 2-5 early on to Thomas Brennan and Ryan Roegner at No. 3 doubles, but managed to take four out of the next five games to knot it 6-6, sending the match into a tiebreaker. Unfortunately, Adams and Andersen couldn't hold on and would suffer a 7-6 loss to the Bulldogs.
Nemanja Guzina and Adams started singles play off strong for the Cardinals', taking first sets on courts one and four, respectively. But Ball State would drop the first frames on the remaining four courts against Butler. The Bulldogs took advantage of their early first set leads and won on courts two and five to go up 3-0 over the Cardinals. After that, Shabat registered a, 6-2, 6-4 defeat over De Negri, clinching the win for Butler.
Nemanja Guzina gave the Cardinals' their lone point of the day. He took down Mason Dragos 7-6, 6-4 for the win at the top position.
The Ball State men's tennis team will celebrate its four seniors Saturday, in Mid-American Conference action as the Cardinals' host Western Michigan for a 2 p.m. first serve at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center.
