Andersen & Carney Earn Wins Over WMU On Senior Day
April 06, 2019 | Men's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team paid tribute to its four seniors Lucas Andersen, Tom Carney, Marko Guzina and Nemanja Guzina, along with former player and graduate assistant Lucas Andersen today at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. In their last match at home, Conner Andersen and classmate Carney ended on a high note with singles wins at the five and six positions, respectively.
But it wasn't enough today, as the Cardinals (10-12, 1-4 MAC) fell to the defending Mid-American Conference Tournament and regular season champions Western Michigan (15-8, 6-0 MAC) by a score of 5-2.
The Cardinals trailed early on in doubles play, finding themselves down on all three courts to the Broncos. Sophomore Thibault de Negri and doubles partner Carney dropped their match first on court two, 6-2. On the top court, the twin brother duo of Marko and Nemanja Guzina were down 5-0 to Peter Kuszynski and Jack Randall, but won three straight games on their way to a comeback. Unfortunately the twosome couldn't hold on and would lose the match, 6-3. Ball State was up at position three by a score of 5-3 before the doubles point was decided.
BSU began its rally early on in singles play, taking first sets on four of the six courts. The Broncos though won first frames at the top two positions and went on to win those matches in straight sets. Conner Andersen captured the first point of the match for Ball State with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the No. 5 slot.
The Broncos led 3-1 with three courts remaining, but the Cardinals still had hope, as the remaining three courts were in third sets. Ball State fought hard but Adams was down 2-5 on four to Kennosuke Nouchi. Adams won the next game to make it a 3-5 score and was up 40-30 before Nouchi put the match away for the Broncos, giving WMU its fourth point.
The Ball State men's tennis team will close out its Mid-American Conference regular season next weekend when it plays at Buffalo (Friday) at 1 p.m. and then Binghamton (Sunday) at 11 a.m.
