Cardinals led Indiana into the 5th in game of inches
INDIANAPOLIS - Under the lights at Victory Field, nationally-ranked Indiana pulled away from Ball State late in the game 9-3 Tuesday night. The home team Cardinals led the game into the 5th before Indiana rallied to hold on for a win.
"Our guys came came ready to play and we executed really well. I like where we're at right now and we have a good chance to finish strong down the stretch," head coach Rich Maloney said.
Ball State scored a run in each of the first 3 innings to take a 3-0 lead. Ross Messina scored twice and Mack Murphy smacked an RBI triple as the Cards jumped out in front behind Drey Jameson then Lukas Jaksich.Â
Indiana, ranked between 23 and 25 in national polls this week and in first place in the Big Ten, scored in the 4th and then got a 2-run homer from Elijah Dunham to tie the game in the 5th. IU then scored the last 7 runs of the game, including a 5-spot in the 9th inning.
Jaksich and Brendan Burns turned in memorable outings on the big stage. Jaksich went 4.2 innings with 7 strikeouts while Burns retired 7 of the 8 batters he faced and struck out 6.Â
"I'm really happy for Brendan because he stayed the course," Maloney said. "It was impressive."
Good To See You, Griff
Griffin Hulecki, a senior who was an outfield starter earlier this year before suffering an injury in Florida, started at DH for Ball State. It was his first start since March 10.

Drey Jameson got the start vs. Indiana and struck out the side on a normal bullpen. He threw 14 pitches and mowed through the top of Indiana's lineup to stay on his normal midweek schedule. Jameson continues to rank among the nation's leaders in strikeouts.

Ball State pitchers combined to strike out 18 Indiana batters, which tied for the most in a 9-inning game this season. BSU struck out 20 batters in a win over Kent State that went 14 innings. The 18 Ks on Tuesday matched the 18 Ks Ball State had in a win over Butler on April 9.
BSU (25-15) is at Ball Diamond this weekend, hosting Bowling Green April 26-28. The Cardinals are just a game out of 1st place after winning a series at Miami last weekend.
