Men's Tennis Sweeps Toledo; Advances To MAC Tourney Semifinals

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The No. 5 Ball State men's tennis team took down No. 4 Toledo by a score of 4-0 in the Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinals Friday afternoon at the West Hills Athletic Club. With the win, the Cardinals improved to 11-12 overall and will advance to the semifinals where Ball State will take on No. 1 Western Michigan at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Saturday's semifinal round will be a rematch of the 2016 MAC Tournament when the Cardinals faced the Broncos on the campus of Northern Illinois. Ball State lost that match 4-0 that season.
The No. 1 twin brother duo of Marko and Nemanja Guzina started the day off strong in doubles action. The twosome didn't give up a game over Toledo's Omar Espinosa and Luka Vitosevic, winning the first doubles match by a score of 6-0. Toledo took the next doubles match defeating Tom Carney and Thibault de Negri by a score of 6-3. The doubles point would come down to court three for the Cardinals. Chris Adams and Conner Andersen were up 5-4 serving for the doubles win and would hold on to clinch the point for Ball State.
The Cardinals carried their momentum in singles action as Ball State took first sets on four of the six courts from Toledo. Carney was the first Cardinal to lock down a win on court six after beating Serjen Olmedo, 6-1, 6-4. Adams followed with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the No. 4 slot, pushing BSU's lead to 3-0.
With three courts remaining, Marko Guzina locked down the winning point at the top spot for Ball State after defeating Luka Vitosevic, 6-2, 6-4.
