April 18, 2019 | Men's Tennis
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State men's tennis team will be the No. 5 seed in this weekend's 2019 Mid-American Conference Tournament which will be hosted by No. 1 Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The Cardinals will play their first tournament match Friday at 2 p.m. against No. 4 Toledo. Ball State enters the tournament with an 11-13 overall mark and a 2-5 conference ledger while the Rockets own a 10-12 record for the year and finished 3-4 in the MAC. Toledo defeated the Cardinals 4-3 in Toledo on March 22.
Ball State last won the MAC Tournament title in 2014 by defeating Buffalo, 4-3, at the Cardinal Creek Tennis Center. Ball State head men's tennis coach Bill Richards is in his 47th season at the helm of the Cardinals, having led the program to 38 MAC tournament and or regular season titles. Since the MAC tournament format started in 1997, the Cardinals have won it seven times (1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2011, and 2014.)Â
The Cardinals still have the record for the longest consecutive MAC championship streak which is 10 from 1984-1993. Ball State won its first MAC Championship in 1984 at Western Michigan. The Cardinals went on to win in Kalamazoo three more times after that, in 1991, 2005 and 2011.
A Ball State win will advance the Cardinals to the semifinal round against No. 1 Western Michigan at 10 a.m. Saturday. The matches are set to be played at Sorensen Courts, if inclement weather occurs the matches will be played indoors at the West Hills Athletic Club.Â
