Cardinals Win 9th Straight
April 01, 2019 | Baseball
Cardinals play at home Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
MUNCIE - A last-minute addition to the Ball State baseball schedule, Monday's game was all about keeping the hot Cardinals in rhythm. The result was a 12-5 win over a 24-10 IU Kokomo team and a 9th consecutive victory for BSU.
As has been the case for the last month, John Ricotta did a great deal of damage at the plate. The first baseman had an RBI single in the 1st inning and a 3-run double in the 2nd for his 2nd game of the season with 4 RBIs. Aaron Simpson had 2 hits and 2 walks and lifted his season batting average past .400, and Mack Murphy doubled twice and walked.
The game against the Cougars was scheduled on Sunday as Ball State needed to get pitchers work and to keep a hot-hitting lineup engaged. IUK head coach Matt Howard was a Ball State assistant and the relationship led to the game being scheduled. It was the perfect workout for John Baker, who pitched 3.0 innings and earned his 3rd win of the season.
After Ricotta's RBI single in the 1st, Ball State tallied a 5-run 2nd inning to bust the game open. Simpson sent an RBI single up the middle and then Noah Powell scored on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded, Ricotta pulled a double down the left-field line to score 3 and make it a 6-0 lead. Ball State led 12-0 before the game saw wholesale lineup changes.
Chayce McDermott worked 3 scoreless innings and Nick Floyd cruised through a perfect 8th inning. As a staff, the Cardinals struck out 17 IUK batters, the team's highest total in a 9-inning game since the Cards fanned 17 at Ohio last May. Ball State pitching has struck out 60 batters over the past 4 games.Â
Now 18-9 on the year, Ball State will host in-state foe Manchester Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. MAC play returns when the Cardinals play at Central Michigan this weekend.Â
