No. 2 Hawai’i Takes Down Ball State at Outrigger Invite
March 09, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
HONOLULU, Hawai'i – No. 2 Hawai'i continued its perfect season with a 3-0 win over the Ball State men's volleyball team late Friday night at the Outrigger Resorts Invitational.
The Rainbow Warriors, now 14-0, eclipsed the program's record best start of 13-0 back in 1996 and have not dropped a set all season. Hawai'i is also one of just two teams still undefeated this season (Long Beach State).
Junior Matt Szews had an outstanding match to lead Ball State (9-10). The lefty finished with a season-best .560 attack percentage to go along with 15 kills. Hawai'i came into the match leading the nation in opponent hitting percentage (.164), but the Cardinals posted a solid .316 attack percentage for the match including .520 in the opening set.
Hawai'i jumped out to a 10-2 lead in set one only to see the Cardinals fight back to within one point late in the set on back-to-back kills from Szews and sophomore Ben Chinnici. The host team responded with back-to-back kills of its own to take the set, 25-22.
The second set featured 10 ties and five lead changes. Hawai'i ended the set on a 9-4 spurt in the 25-19 win.
Set three was very similar to set two as the Cardinals were only down one point midway through, 16-15. The Rainbow Warriors then used a 5-1 spurt to gain some breathing room and complete the sweep.
Ball State and Hawai'i last met in the 2017 Outrigger Invite championship match, with Hawai'i prevailing, 3-1.
Hawai'i will take on No. 6 Pepperdine in this year's championship match Saturday night. Meanwhile, the Cardinals will wrap up play at the Outrigger Invitational Saturday against King. Match time is set for 9 p.m. ET.
