CHARLESTON, S.C. - It took an extra day due to rain, but Ball State finished the Swig & Swine Classic in South Carolina with a 3-1 record. Â
After beating Charleston Southern on Friday, the Cardinals beat Notre Dame twice by a combined score of 8-2 heading into the fourth and final game of the weekend. The finale against CSU was bumped to Monday, with the home team gaining a big lead early and downing BSU 12-4.
Trailing 8-0, Ball State's bats came alive with four runs in the 7th. Griffin Hulecki sent an RBI single up the middle to score Noah Navarro, and Hulecki scored on an RBI fielder's choice. Erek Bolton added an RBI single to drive in Ross Messina, who also had an RBI in the inning.
Messina, who batted .583 with four XBH in Charleston, led the Cards with a double, run and RBI. BSU's four runs on the day came on four hits. Charleston Southern, which scored eight runs in the first three innings, totaled 15 hits (four XBH).
Ball State's spring trip continues Wednesday night with a game at UCF. First pitch in Orlando is set for 6:30. Then there are four games at the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte.
