Ball State Falls to Tough Loyola Squad
March 21, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team played much better after getting off to a slow start in the opening set, but it wasn't enough as No. 10 Loyola dominated the match to earn a 3-0 victory at Worthen Arena Thursday night.
The Cardinals fell to 12-11 overall and 3-5 in league play while Loyola improved to 14-7 and 7-2 in the MIVA.
Despite the loss, Ball State had 45 kills to Loyola's 36, and 44 assists to the Ramblers' 35. The Cardinals also held an edge in digs with a 36-34 count. Blocking was dominated by LUC as it had a 14-3 advantage. Loyola also had two aces while BSU had just one.
"I didn't think we played well enough in any aspect of the game tonight to get a win," said head coach Joel Walton. "I appreciated the focus and energy that we showed at times, but our execution still needs some work."
Loyola scored the first point of the match and never trailed through the entire first set. The Ramblers led by as many as seven before winning the game, 25-19. The Cardinals responded by jumping out to a 5-1 advantage in the second set, but the Ramblers fought back to tie it up and eventually take the lead. LUC gradually pulled away and did enough at the end of the set to win it 25-22.
While the third set was much closer than the first, Ball State again failed to ever lead as Loyola clinched the match on a 25-21 game victory. The Cardinals battled through the entire set but could never quite catch up.
Matt Szews paced Ball State with 14 kills on the night and was followed by David Siebum who had 10. Quinn Isaacson had 40 assists for the match as well as a team-high nine digs. Szews had the lone service ace of the night, and four different Cardinals recorded a single block.
Ball State now prepares to welcome No. 7 Lewis to town for the final regular season match in Worthen Arena this season. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. ET Saturday, with streaming available via ESPN3.
