Early homer, dominant pitching lead Ball State to win over Purdue
MUNCIE - Ball State set the tone with early offense and dominant pitching Tuesday afternoon in a 6-0 win over Purdue. Cardinals pitchers allowed just three hits on the day and BSU's lineup scored five runs in the first two innings, more than enough to capture its third win in four games.
John Ricotta delivered a 3-run shot with two outs in the bottom of the 1st, and Ball State rolled from there. An RBI fielder's choice from Andre Orselli and an RBI single from Noah Navarro made the score 5-0 early and the pitching staff took care of the rest.
Chayce McDermott (2-0) started and faced seven batters, retiring six before giving way to upperclassmen Brendan Burns and Nick Floyd. Burns and Floyd threw strikes and kept Purdue at bay, combining to allow just three hits and one walks over 6.0 innings. Burns and Floyd combined to throw 77 pitches, with 57 going for strikes. Kyle Nicolas slammed the door shut in the 9th. Purdue only managed six baserunners on the day, and only one of them reached 3rd base.
Orselli also delivered the sixth and final run of the day on a triple to left. In just 15 collegiate plate appearances, the freshman 2-way player has five RBIs and has scored four runs.
On a local note, Ball State now owns two wins over Notre Dame, one over Purdue and another one over Fort Wayne, who visits Muncie Wednesday, March 20. BSU has won three of the last four against Purdue dating back to 2017, and also shut out the Boilermakers 2-0 last year.
Aaron Simpson went 3-for-5 and Navarro and Orselli each had two hits.
After Wednesday's game vs. Fort Wayne, the Cardinals (11-9) will play Western Michigan to open MAC play. Fans can follow the Cards on Twitter and Instagram at @BallStateBB and can listen to games live online.
