Softball Hits 20 Wins With 10-3 Victory Over Cleveland State
March 16, 2019 | Softball
Â
The Cardinals (20-10) return to action later this afternoon with a scheduled 3:45 p.m. first pitch versus the host Bears.
Â
Ball State opened the game versus the Vikings (5-15) strong, as each of the first three batters came around to score. Junior left fielder Haley Dominique started the rally with a double to left field and sophomore second baseman Stacy Payton followed with an RBI double down the right field line.Â
Â
Sophomore designated player Kendall Fields made it a 3-0 game with her second home run of the season, a deep shot to dead center field.
Â
After Cleveland State capitalized on an error to score an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning, Ball State extended its lead to 6-1 with a three-run home run from Dominique in the top of the fourth. It was Dominique's fifth home run of the season, and her third in the past four games.
Â
Ball State added its seventh run in the top of the fifth inning, pulling ahead 7-1 after a leadoff double from Fields and a one-out RBI double from freshman first baseman Mackenzie McCarty.
Â
The Vikings countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, only to see the Ball State score one more in the top of the sixth and two in the seventh to win the game 10-3.
Â
The run in the sixth came on an RBI single to right field by senior pinch hitter Annie Robinson. Freshman center fielder Kim Manuel scored from second on the play after singling through the left side and moving to second on a Dominique single.
Â
In the seventh, McCarty doubled through the right side to open the inning and sophomore right fielder Katie Janiga followed with an RBI triple to nearly the exact same spot. Sophomore shortstop Hailey Demnianiuk capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right.
Â
Dominique and Manuel finished the day with three hits apiece, while Fields and McCarty added two each.
Â
In the circle, freshman Tieghan Morio picked up the win after limiting Cleveland State to three hits and three runs, only two of which were earned, over 5.0 innings of work. She also struck out three batters and improved to 3-1 on the year.
Â
Freshman Sarah Venker pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit while striking out three of the seven batters she faced in the game.
