Men’s Golfers Leave Scottsdale on High Note with Low Final Round
March 10, 2019 | Men's Golf
Cardinals finish ninth at Desert Mountain, led by senior Timothy Wiseman
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Ball State men's golf team turned in the second-best final round of any team in the field Sunday to move up to ninth place on the final leaderboard at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate.
The Cardinals' even-par round of 288 was nine shots better than tournament champion Mississippi State and just one off the best score of the day recorded by runner-up Kansas.
It was quite a bounce back from Saturday's second round when Ball State's 308 was the second-worst of the 12 teams competing on the Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain. That round was 16 shots higher than either of the Cardinals' other two this weekend and left them chasing on the final day.
Jack Cunningham and Keegan Bronnenberg led the final-round charge with scores of 71 to go along with a 72 from Joey Ranieri and a 74 from Timothy Wiseman as BSU's counting scores.
All four of those golfers finished the 54-hole event within two shots of each other. Wiseman led the way in a tie for 22nd place at 6 over par. Cunningham was one shot behind him in 28th, while Bronnenberg and Ranieri tied for 32nd.
Mississippi State cooled off after playing the first 36 holes in 17 under par, but the Bulldogs' 11-shot cushion entering the final day was too much to overcome. They finished six shots clear of the field at 856 (-8), in front of top-50 teams Kansas, Marquette and Northwestern.
Garrett Johnson secured the sweep for Mississippi State, winning individual medalist honors at 9 under, one shot better than Harry Hillier of Kansas.
Ball State's total of 890 (+26) left the Cardinals right between Big Ten teams Rutgers and Michigan in the final standings.
The Desert Mountain Intercollegiate was Ball State's first stroke play event of the spring. The Cardinals will send individuals to compete April 1-2 at the Butler Invitational and return to action as a full team April 5-7 at Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph Championship.
