Ball State freshman finishes just three shots back at Highland
INDIANAPOLIS -- Freshman Joey Ranieri tied for fourth place to lead four Ball State men's golfers competing as individuals at this week's Butler Spring Invitational.
Ranieri backed up an opening-round 69, the best of his rookie campaign, with a 71 in Tuesday's final round at Highland Golf & Country Club. His even-par total of 140 put him just three shots behind tournament medalist Nick Bienz of IUPUI. The fourth-place finish was also a season best.
The tournament was originally scheduled for 54 holes but was shortened because of snow over the weekend. IUPUI won the team portion of the event; Ball State did not compete as a team.
Yianni Kostouros, another Ball State freshman, finished 16th in the field of 57 golfers at 4 over par. Tyler Green (+6) tied for 21st, and CJ Jones (+9) tied for 38th to round out the Cardinals' contingent.
Ball State will return to team competition this weekend, traveling to the annual Mason Rudolph Championship at the Vanderbilt Legends Club outside Nashville, Tennessee. The action begins Friday morning.
