Cardinals’ Winning Streak Snapped in Tough Loss to McKendree
February 07, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. – Down a few players to injury and playing earlier in the week than usual after a long trip to the East Coast, the Ball State men's volleyball team took a tough loss to McKendree as the Bearcats came ready to play and swept the Cardinals, 3-0, on Thursday night at Worthen Arena.
With the loss, the Cardinals dropped to 6-5 for the year and 1-1 in MIVA competition. McKendree improved to 4-4 for the season and 1-0 in conference play. The defeat also snapped a four-match winning streak for BSU.
"Unfortunately, I thought we played like a team that just got back from a long road trip," said head coach Joel Walton. "We just didn't have much energy out there and it showed. We'll need to really get it fixed fast because we have a good team coming to our gym on Sunday."
The key stat on the night was the blocking differential. McKendree doubled up Ball State in that column with a 14-7 advantage. The Cardinals did have 48 kills to 45 for the Bearcats and assisted on 48 balls to McKendree's 41. BSU also had 40 digs to 27 for the Bearcats.
The match got off to a promising start for Ball State in set one as the Cardinals jumped out to an early 10-5 advantage. Unfortunately, that was one of only a few bright spots for BSU as McKendree dominated the remainder of the night. Ball State gave itself chances in every set, especially set two where it forced the game to extra points, but could never capitalize as it was ultimately swept.
Matt Szews led the Cardinals in kills with 17 on the night and was followed by 13 from Kaleb Jenness. Quinn Isaacson totaled 43 assists while stepping in for a banged up Jake Romano, and Lemuel Turner and Szews led the way in blocks with three apiece. Isaacson and Nick LaVanchy led the team in digs with eight while Szews earned the only service ace of the evening.
Ball State will have a few days to recover as it hosts No. 13 George Mason on Sunday night. The Patriots currently hold a record of 7-1 and will face Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday. Sunday's match gets underway at 7 p.m. ET.
