AKRON, Ohio – In the final event of the night, the 200 Free Relay team broke the school record for Ball State swimming and diving on a successful day two of the Mid-American Conference swimming and diving championships.
As a team, Ball State currently sits in seventh place with 87 points. Akron leads the way with 319.
The final event of day two was the 200 Free Relay in which a team made up of Peighton Gilbert, Anne Vormohr, Makenna Bottorff and Alexa McDonald set the Ball State school record with a time of 1:33.05. The previous record was 1:33.49 from 2014.
Gilbert advanced to the consolation finals of the 50 Free by clocking a time of 23.33 in preliminaries which was not only a lifetime best, but moved her from sixth to fourth on the fastest 50 Free times in school history. Gilbert later finished 15th in the finals with a time of 23.36. Abbie McCarter, Maryn Meldrum and Makenna Bottorff joined Gilbert by posting lifetime bests in the 50 Free, but narrowly missed the finals cut.
The 500 Free was another event in which the Cardinals finished with career and season-best times. Cassidy Blackwin started the day with a time of 5:11.29 for a season high and was followed by Elizabeth Graham who recorded a lifetime best of 5:00.03 which was good for the sixth-best time in school history. Audrey Mayer also got in on the fun with a career-best time of 5:06.90, while freshman Katie Walker had a lifetime best of 5:00.64 which is the seventh best ever at Ball State.
Kayce Ingram continued the high-achieving trend in the 200 IM by finishing with a season-best time of 2:17.56. Audrey Schank followed with a lifetime best of 2:11.97.
The diving portion of the championships also got underway on Thursday with the 1M. Both Rachel Bertram and Rachel Smallwood advanced to the consolation finals for Ball State, and Bertram won those finals with a score of 268.15.
