Alabama Takes Series Opener from Ball State

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning and held the Ball State baseball bats in check all night on the way to a 7-1 victory Friday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
Ball State (1-4) starting pitcher Drey Jameson, who struck out nine batters and held No. 12 Stanford hitless in six innings in his first outing, struck out nine batters again, but was also charged with five earned runs in four-plus innings of work against Alabama (4-1).
The Crimson Tide tallied a pair of two-out RBI hits in the opening frame to grab the early 3-0 lead. Keith Holcombe then hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to stretch the cushion to 6-0.
Alabama's pitching held the Cardinals scoreless until the top of the ninth inning. Nick Powell scored on Noah Navarro's RBI groundout.
The two teams will attempt to play game two on Saturday, weather permitting. The start time has been pushed up to 1 p.m. ET (noon CT). Follow @BallStateBB for any game updates.
