Mastodons too much for Cardinals in 3-0 Defeat
February 21, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State men's volleyball team entered Thursday looking to win its seventh straight against Purdue Fort Wayne but had no such luck as the Mastodons took a 3-0 decision in quick fashion at Worthen Arena.
The Cardinals dropped to 7-8 for the year and 1-4 in MIVA play while Purdue Fort Wayne improved to 9-7 and 3-2 in league competition.
"We knew coming in that Fort Wayne was a really good team," said head coach Joel Walton. "Unfortunately, we didn't display the kind of discipline or consistency tonight that it takes to beat a good team like that."
Ball State had a 9-7 advantage in blocking and 5-3 edge in service aces, but the remainder of the statistical categories belonged to the 'Dons. Purdue Fort Wayne had 44 kills to BSU's 32 and 38 digs to 27 for the Cardinals. The Mastodons also compiled 38 assists to Ball State's 32.
The Cardinals jumped out to a five-point lead in set one but saw it disappear as Purdue Fort Wayne strung together an 8-1 run to take over and win the set, 25-21. Game two may have been Ball State's best chance for a win as the score was tied late at 24 apiece, but the 'Dons ended it with the final two points to take a commanding 2-0 lead. The final set remained close early with a 15-15 tie, but a three-point run from Purdue Fort Wayne created enough separation for the Mastodons to run away and complete the sweep.
Matt Szews led the Cardinals in kills with 10 while Ben Chinnici played solid off the bench with nine kills on a .400 hitting percentage. Quinn Isaacson and Courtland Scharenborg split time at the setter position to combine for 28 of BSU's 32 kills, and five different Cardinals recorded an ace. Szews finished the night with a team-high three kills and Isaacson led the way in digs with seven.
Ball State gets the weekend off to regroup and will be in action next against Lindenwood on Friday, March 1, in Muncie. First serve will take place at 7 p.m. ET.
