Cardinals Rebound with 3-0 Sweep of Lindenwood
March 01, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State University men's volleyball team picked up a crucial conference victory as it swept Lindenwood, 3-0, in convincing fashion on Friday night at Worthen Arena.
The Cardinals got back to .500 on the year with an 8-8 record and 2-4 in MIVA play. Lindenwood fell to 7-10 for the season and dropped to 3-4 in the league.
"It's nice to see our guys play the way they're capable of playing," said head coach Joel Walton. "Our serve put a lot of pressure on Lindenwood tonight. We passed well and played consistent. It was really a good team effort tonight. Our guys followed the scouting report and competed."
The Cardinals were efficient on the night, hitting .337 with 40 kills. Ball State assisted on 36 of those 40 kills, and put down five service aces while allowing none. The BSU defense compiled 25 digs and 12 total blocks.
Set one belonged to the Cardinals from the start as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead behind some impressive serving by Blake Reardon, who had three aces on the set. The Lions pulled within two but that was as close as it got as BSU went on to win the set, 25-20. Lindenwood took its turn to lead early in game two when it jumped out to a 10-6 advantage, forcing a Ball State timeout. From there, the Cardinals ripped off a 16-5 run and eventually won the set, 25-16, to take a 2-0 lead.
Needing a victory in set three for the sweep, Ball State left no doubt as it led from start to finish. The Cardinals gradually built their lead larger and larger, leading by as many as 11 points before putting away the Lions, 25-14, on a block by Lemuel Turner.
Matt Szews led the way with 13 kills for the match, and added an assist, two aces, five blocks and four digs to his stat line. Ben Chinnici added nine kills while Reardon had eight. Quinn Isaacson played an efficient match with 31 of the team's 36 assists. He also had a team high seven digs. Reardon's three assists were a match high.
"We have a good amount of depth to our roster, and it was nice to see Blake and Ben come in as starters tonight to give us a lift," Walton said. "Those guys helped us play clean tonight, and we want to duplicate that kind of performance."
Ball State is back in action on Saturday night when Quincy comes to town. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. ET with the match available for streaming on BallStateSports.com/watch.
