Cardinals Take Care of Sacred Heart in 3-1 Victory

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Ball State University men's volleyball team played three solid sets of volleyball and left little doubt about the outcome as it cruised to a 3-1 defeat of Sacred Heart on Saturday night.
The win marked the fourth straight for the Cardinals and improved their record to 6-4 for the year. Sacred Heart dropped to 1-5 on the season with the loss.
Ball State tallied 47 kills on the night to SHU's 42 and outhit the Pioneers by a margin of .282 to .149. Service aces were even at five apiece while BSU had 10 more assists than Sacred Heart at a 46-36 mark. The Cardinals also compiled 42 digs to 35 for the Pioneers.
Sets one and two were a breeze for Ball State as they won by scores of 25- 17 and 25-21. The Cardinals appeared to be headed for a sweep, but Sacred Heart wouldn't go down without a fight as it dominated the third set by winning 25-16.
Ball State quickly regrouped in game four and ensured the match wouldn't go to a fifth set as it won 25-15. The Cardinals finished the set in style by scoring seven of the final nine points of the match.
Matt Szews led Ball State in kills on the night with 15 on a .333 hitting percentage. He was closely followed by Kaleb Jenness who had 13 kills as the other Cardinal in double figures. Jake Romano did a good job setting up his attackers all night as he tallied 38 assists to go with seven digs. Lemuel Turner continued his solid stretch of blocking by leading the team with five, and Jenness had a match-high 11 digs.
Ball State now returns back to Muncie where it will continue MIVA play. The Cardinals square off with conference foe McKendree on Thursday (Feb. 7) and then host George Mason on Sunday (Feb. 10). Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
