Missed Opportunities Result in Close, 3-1 Loss at Loyola
February 16, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
CHICAGO – The Ball State men's volleyball team won the opening set and kept it close the entire night, but ultimately couldn't finish enough sets as it fell to Loyola, 3-1, on Saturday night.
The Cardinals dropped to .500 for the year with a 7-7 record and 1-3 mark in MIVA play. Loyola improved to 11-3 and a perfect 4-0 in league play.
"One of the things we talked about before the match was making sure that we competed all the way through," said head coach Joel Walton. "We did that tonight and it was close. We just came up a couple points short."
The stat sheet reflected the even nature of the match as Ball State had 59 kills to Loyola's 62. The Ramblers had 49 digs to BSU's 42 and 13 blocks to 9.5 for the Cardinals.
Set one was back-and-forth all the way until Loyola held set point with the scoreboard reading 24-23. Ball State showed its resiliency and scored the next four points of the set to win it 27-25 and jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately for Ball State, set two was the one that got away and coach Walton knew it too. "I feel like we had opportunities from game two that got away from us. It would have been really nice to go up 2-0, but they battled and got it done."
The Cardinals fought off two more set points for the Ramblers and got the score to 27-26 with a set point of their own. A long rally just didn't go BSU's way and Loyola scored three-straight points to even the match with a 29-27 set victory.
Games three and four were similarly close, but the Cardinals just ran out of gas as Loyola pulled away at the end to win them both 25-21 and 25-23.
Matt Szews and David Siebum led the way for Ball State with 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Parker Swartz also had an impressive night as he tallied 11 kills on an .846 hitting percentage. Setter Quinn Isaacson totaled 47 assists and 10 digs, while Felix Egharevba led the team in blocks with six.
The Cardinals will resume MIVA play next week with a home match against Purdue Fort Wayne on Thursday (Feb. 21). First serve is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
