Cardinals Can’t Find Rhythm in 3-0 Loss at No. 10 Lewis
February 15, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – The Ball State men's volleyball team struggled to generate much offense while Lewis had an incredible night blocking the BSU attack, and the Cardinals fell to the Flyers, 3-0, on Friday night.
Ball State dropped to 7-6 overall and 1-2 in MIVA play with the loss while Lewis improved to 10-4 and 3-0 in league competition.
"We didn't do a very good job neutralizing their offense, starting with our inability to serve consistently," said head coach Joel Walton. "We just weren't as sharp as we needed to be to beat a good team tonight."
The Cardinals kept things surprisingly close in the kills column with 37 to Lewis' 39, but errors and the Flyers' blocking is what haunted BSU. Lewis compiled 17 block assists and one solo block to just six block assists for Ball State. The Cardinals were plagued by 18 attack errors, 14 service errors, two block errors and four reception errors. BSU did have 35 assists and 23 digs on the night.
Set one was Ball State's best chance to win a game in the match with the teams trading points nearly the entire way until the scoreboard read 20-20. Lewis took the next three points and BSU couldn't quite recover as the Flyers went on to take a 1-0 lead with a 25-23 set victory. The Cardinals' offense sputtered the remainder of the match as Lewis quickly claimed the next two games by scores of 25-21 and 25-17.
Matt Szews led Ball State in kills with 12 and was the only Cardinal in double digits. Setter Quinn Isaacson had 32 of the team's 35 assists, and also led BSU in digs with seven. Lemuel Turner had a team-high two blocks on the night and three different Cardinals recorded a service ace.
Ball State will aim to regroup quickly as another challenge awaits tomorrow night at No. 7 Loyola. Coach Walton knows the task his team faces and will look to have the Cardinals prepared. "We're playing on the road against another good team in their home gym, and they'll be comfortable and ready for us."
First serve against the Ramblers is slated for 8 p.m. ET with the match being broadcast on ESPN3.
