MUNCIE, Ind. -- The Hoosieroons will return to Muncie for one day – Saturday, February 23 – on "Hoosieroons and Hoops Day" inside Worthen Arena.
In the early 1920s, when Ball State was known as the Indiana Normal School Eastern Division, its nickname was the Hoosieroons. The school's athletics teams received the "Cardinals" nickname in 1927, after the name was suggested by then-athletic director Paul "Billy" Williams and voted upon by the student body.
That's right, the Ball State men's and women's basketball teams will don Hoosieroons uniforms as part of the University's Centennial Celebration, harkening back to that time when Hoosieroons was the moniker for varsity teams. Fans will be able to bid on the Hooserioons jerseys by visiting www.bsu.edu/100 with all proceeds benefitting Ball State Athletics.
"We are fortunate to have a trustee like Mike McDaniel who has been instrumental in bringing this Hoosieroons and Hoops idea to fruition," said director of athletics, Beth Goetz. "We are going to have a lot of fun that day. I encourage Ball State fans to pack the nest for these key MAC games!"
President Geoffrey S. Mearns said the game represents an excellent opportunity to feature athletics in the University's ongoing celebration of its Centennial.
"Last June, we kicked off our year-long effort to celebrate our 100th anniversary. Our goal throughout the year has been to embrace our bold future as we honor our proud past. This event will be an entertaining way for us to do exactly that."
The men's basketball team will host Central Michigan at 2 p.m. while the women follow with a 4:30 p.m. tilt with Toledo. Fans can purchase two tickets to the doubleheader for $19.18, referencing the university's founding year of 1918. For fans attending the women's basketball game only, a buy one ticket, get one ticket deal is available.
The first 1,000 fans to enter Worthen on the doubleheader day will receive a limited-edition Hoosieroons T-Shirt. As at all weekend home basketball games, face painting and balloon artistry will be available on the concourse. This season is also the first for beer sales in the arena for those 21 and over.
Fans are encouraged to call 888-BSU-TICKET or buy online in advance to avoid lines on game day.
