WBB Struggles Offensively, Loses On The Road To Akron
February 13, 2019 | Women's Basketball
AKRON, Ohio – The Ball State women's basketball team fell behind early in tonight's Mid-American Conference game at Akron and could never recover, losing the contest by a score of 91-61 in James A. Rhodes Arena.
It was the first time the Zips had defeated the Cardinals since the 2014 season.
Ball State (7-16, 2-9 MAC) shot only 33 percent from the field and made just 9-of-31 shots in the first half.
Sophomore forward Oshlynn Brown led the Cardinals with 16 points and nine rebounds while senior guard Jasmin Samz along with sophomore guard Maliah Howard-Bass added 12 each. Freshman guard Gabby Smith managed to knock down back-to-back 3-pointers in the closing minutes of play to end the game with 11.
The Zips started the game with a quick 13-3 run over the Cardinals. Ball State got off to a slow start from the floor, shooting 1-of-10 in the first quarter of play. Although the Cardinals had turned up their defense after the media timeout, Akron managed to score seven more points to take a 20-3 advantage over BSU heading into the second frame of action.
Howard-Bass struck first in the second quarter for Ball State, Brown and Samz followed with four more points, as things were starting to look up offensively for Ball State. But Akron answered back by rattling off eight-straight points, making it a 28-9 ball game with 4:57 left in the first half. BSU trailed by as many as 20 in the second stanza but closed out the half with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 14 (37-23) at intermission.
The Cardinals tried to rally throughout the second half, fighting for rebounds and trying to get their shots to fall. Unfortunately, BSU struggled offensively the remainder of the contest.
Akron (14-8, 5-6 MAC) didn't particularly have a great shooting night either, but scored 11 points off of the Cardinals 12 miscues. The Zips also won the points in the paint battle, 40-to-30.
The Ball State women's basketball team continues its two-game road swing when it travels to Eastern Michigan Saturday for a 2 p.m. tipoff on ESPN+.
