Déjà vu at EY Match Play: Cards Top EMU for Third, Miami Repeats as Champ
February 12, 2019 | Men's Golf
Jones caps perfect week; Cunningham, Kostouros win twice each
DADE CITY, Fla. -- The Ball State men's golf team defeated top-seeded Eastern Michigan 4-2 Tuesday, besting the Eagles for third place at the Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play for the second straight year.
No. 2 seed Miami dispatched of Bowling Green by a 5-1 margin in the championship match to defend its title on the South Course at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.
C.J. Jones polished off a 3-0-0 week at the No. 3 spot in Ball State's lineup with a 3&2 victory over EMU's Zach Sudinsky. Jack Cunningham and Keegan Bronnenberg were also winners in just 16 holes Tuesday, while freshman Yianni Kostouros clinched the team victory with a 1 up win over Zack Mason.
Kostouros finished the event 2-0-1 at the No. 6 position in the order, while Cunningham ended the week 2-1-0 at the No. 5 spot.
Miami's quest for a repeat championship barely survived Monday's opening round. The RedHawks squeaked past Drake on a tiebreaker and then defeated Ball State 4-2 in a tight afternoon match to reach the finals.
In other consolation action Tuesday, DePaul defeated Ohio for fifth place and Drake topped Loyola for seventh place.
This week's competition marked Ball State's first of the spring schedule. The Cardinals will return to action March 9-10 with their first stroke play event of the spring at Michigan's Desert Mountain Intercollegiate in Scottsdale, Arizona.
