Cardinals battle DePaul in Monday morning’s opening round
The Ball State men's golf team will host the eighth annual Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play this week at Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club in Dade City, Florida.
The Cardinals' first event of the spring season begins Monday at 8:30 a.m. on Lake Jovita's South Course. The first two rounds will be played Monday, and the final round will be played Tuesday.
Ball State is the No. 3 seed, based on Golfstat rankings, and will square off with No. 6 seed DePaul in the opening round. The other match in the Cardinals' half of the bracket features No. 2 seed Miami University against No. 7 seed Drake.
Miami returns as the defending champion after edging Toledo on tiebreakers in last year's championship match. Ball State finished third.
The first-round matchups on the other side of the draw feature No. 1 seed Eastern Michigan against No. 8 seed Loyola Chicago and No. 4 seed Bowling Green versus No. 5 seed Ohio.
Every team will play three matches over the two days. Winners will advance in the championship bracket, while losing teams will continue competition in the consolation bracket.
Each team match will consist of six individual matches. Team lineups are also based upon current rankings. Keegan Bronnenberg occupies the No. 1 spot for Ball State, followed by Timothy Wiseman, CJ Jones, Joey Ranieri, Jack Cunningham and Yianni Kostouros.
Ball State is a two-time champion of the event, having won in 2012 and 2014. Formerly known as the Mid-American Match Play, the event was renamed in 2015 in honor of former Ball State men's golf coach Earl Yestingsmeier, who passed away in January 2014.
