WBB Uses Strong Second Half To Close Out Non-Conference Play With Win Over Urbana
December 30, 2019 | Women's Basketball
MUNCIE, Ind. - Sophomore forward Thelma Dis Agustsdottir scored 21 points tonight, 16 of which were in the second half, to help lift Ball State past Urbana Monday night in Worthen Arena. The Cardinals (8-4) defeated the Blue Knights (7-6) by a score of 84-49 in their non-conference season finale.
It wasn't easy, but a combination of the Cardinals hot second half offense along with Ball State's tenacious defense helped Ball State end the night on a high note despite trailing Urbana after the first half, 34-32. Ball State outscored Urbana in the final 20 minutes of play, 52-15.
After a nine-day break from competition, the Cardinals struggled to find their offensive groove in the first 10 minutes of the game. Senior Arbrie Benson ended the first frame with a layup but Ball State trailed Urbana by two 17-15 heading into the second stanza.
Agustsdottir opened the second period with five-straight points to give Ball State a 20-19 lead. Junior Oshlynn Brown also had some pivotal baskets to keep the Cardinals stay close to the Blue Knights but Urbana continued to answer back, making it a seesaw match between the two teams for the duration of the second period. Ball State still trailed Urbana by four 34-30 at the break.
The Cardinals started to bounce back after halftime but that came to no surprise as Ball State began to mesh getting baskets from Agustsdottir, graduate senior Jasmin Samz, freshman Sydney Freeman, freshman Annie Rauch, senior Aliyah Walker and Brown. You could say it was quite the group effort as the Cardinals would go on to outscore the Blue Knights 28-8 to take an impressive 60-42 cushion into the final frame.
Urbana never recovered from Ball State's 61 (11-18) percent shooting in the third quarter. The Cardinals also held the Blue Knights to 18 (3-16) percent from the floor in the third period.
For the game, Agustsdottir was just two points shy of her career best with 21 points. Brown claimed her 24th double-double of her career with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Samz registered a 13-point performance while Rauch had a season best 12 points.
The Ball State women's basketball team will open Mid-American Conference action at home on Saturday, Jan. 4 against Kent State. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. in Worthen Arena.
