December 16, 2019 | Football
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced its 2019 Academic All-MAC football team today, and the Ball State Cardinals topped the list with 20 players. Fifteen of the 20 Cardinal student-athletes made a return appearance on this list.
Offensive linemen Danny Pinter and Zac Ricketts, along with tight end Kyle Schrank, were selected to the Academic All-MAC team for a fourth time. Three other players – offensive lineman Chris Beech, wide receiver Riley Miller and offensive lineman Andrew Poenitsch – qualified for the third time in their collegiate careers.
Making the Academic All-MAC team for a second time were offensive lineman Curtis Blackwell, linebacker Brock Burns, safety Bryce Cosby, linebacker Jimmy Daw, wide receiver Trevor Hohlt, running back Will Jones, quarterback Drew Plitt, linebacker Jacob White and linebacker Jordan Williams.
Running back Tye Evans, safety Demetrius Murray, fullback Cody Rudy, offensive lineman Kaleb Slaven and offensive lineman Anthony Todd made their debut on the Academic All-MAC team.
Academic All-MAC honors are awarded to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
Ball State concluded the 2019 season 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the Mid-American Conference. The Cardinals won the Bronze Stalk Trophy from Northern Illinois for the first time since 2008 and capped the year by knocking off MAC champion Miami for the Red Bird Rivalry Trophy, 41-27. Ball State led the conference in scoring (34.8 points per game) and total offense (463.0 yards per game). BSU's defense tallied 24 turnovers, which ranked 10th nationally.
