Clephane’s Last-Second Shot Lifts WBB Past Lehigh
November 28, 2019 | Women's Basketball
NASSAU, The Bahamas - Redshirt freshman Anna Clephane put the exclamation point on tonight's contest against Lehigh with a rebound and a putback as time expired to boost Ball State past the Mountain Hawks 54-52 Thursday in the opening game of the 2019 Bahamas Hoopfest.
The Cardinals (4-2) had the lead over Lehigh (5-1) in the closing minutes but some unwanted fouls and missed free throws allowed the Mountain Hawks to knot the game 52-52 with just seconds remaining. In what would be the last possession of the ball game, Ball State freshman Sydney Freeman would miss a 3-pointer but Clephane came out of nowhere to grab the rebound and then make the basket at the buzzer for the Cardinals' victory.
It was a low scoring contest for both teams, Ball State was led by senior Jasmin Samz with 11 points while teammate sophomore Thelma Dis Agustsdottir finished the game with 10. Defensively, junior Oshlynn Brown led the Cardinals with eight rebounds.
The first quarter was a back-and-forth affair, as both teams were trying to get an offensive rhythm. The Cardinals led 13-8 with a minute to go, getting a 3-point basket from Freeman. Lehigh, however, would score the last basket to cut the Cardinals lead to two heading into the second frame of action.
It continued to be a track meet of sorts as both teams were depending on their defensive game. The Cardinals though continued to hold onto a slim advantage over Lehigh. Ball State was up by only two possessions, 19-15, with 3:17 left in the first half. The Cardinals then went coast-to-coast with Agustsdottir sealing the deal, to give the Cardinals their largest lead of the contest, 22-15 with 55 seconds remaining. Lehigh managed to score a basket to end the second period. Ball State would end the quarter with a five-point edge over the Mountain Hawks at intermission.
Lehigh opened the third frame of action with a quick 6-0 run to give the Mountain Hawks their first lead of the game. Agustsdottir snapped the run with a 3-pointer on the left side to put the Cardinals back on top. At the media timeout, Lehigh still led by two, 27-25 and the Mountains Hawks went on to lead the majority of the third quarter. Ball State managed to attack the basket and draw some late fouls to take a 35-31 lead into the final 10 minutes of the game. Clephane and Samz did what they do best and would go 4-of-4 from the free throw line to give the Cardinals a 35-31 lead.
The Ball State women's basketball team will wrap up its competition at The Bahamas Hoopfest when it faces Big Ten foe Wisconsin Friday at 7 p.m. After Friday, the Cardinals will return home to Worthen Arena on Saturday, Dec. 7 against Western Kentucky at 3:30 p.m.
