Regular Season Ends With Senior Day; FH Hosts Appalachian State
October 31, 2019 | Field Hockey
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Ball State field hockey team (4-12, 2-3 MAC) will end its 2019 regular season Friday at home against Appalachian State (9-7, 1-4 MAC). The game is slated for a 3 p.m. ET start at the Briner Sports Complex.
Prior to the game, the Cardinals will pay tribute to their six seniors: Hannah Bohn, Arantxa Rosainz Caloca, Haley Jolly, Alison McMullen, Hillary Scott and Michelle Shampton.
Last weekend Ball State defeated Longwood in overtime, 2-1 and then fell to Virginia Commonwealth 2-1 on Sunday. Junior Sierra Jefferson was awarded MAC Offensive Player of the Week this week for her efforts after creating countless attacking opportunities for the Cardinals against both opponents.
Appalachian State enters today's contest with a two-game losing streak. The Mountaineers lone conference win came against Central Michigan on Oct. 5 by a score of 5-2. The series between the two programs dates back to 2006 with the Cardinals leading the all-time series, 5-3. Ball State defeated Appalachian State in overtime by score of 1-0 last season off of junior Rachel Pereira's game-winner off of an OT penalty stroke.
After Friday, Ball State will compete at the 2019 Mid-American Conference Tournament in Oxford, Ohio on the campus of Miami University. The tournament begins Wednesday, Nov. 6 at noon and will end Saturday, Nov. 9 with the championship contest at 2 p.m.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH STEPHANIE BERNTHAL
Hannah Bohn
"In her time as a Cardinal, Hannah has grown more than almost any player I have coached. She is one of the hardest workers and most determined athletes you will find. It's a pleasure to see how she has blossomed in her ability to see the game at a higher level and execute more elite technical skills than she probably ever imagined she would. That's the beauty of Hannah—she is incredibly humble and has no idea how good she is! Her only focus is working hard for her team and this has helped transformed our midfield into a force to be reckoned with. As tough as she is, Hannah is also able to lighten any tense situation with humor and always helps keep our team loose. We are so proud of all that Hannah has accomplished, and are grateful for the passion she has brought to this field every day."
Arantxa Rosainz Calloca
"We are very fortunate that timing allowed for Ronnie to come to Ball State just as I arrived in Muncie. She was a perfect fit for our Cardinal team—she loves hockey with her whole heart and is just as passionate about inspiring her teammates to be great. Ronnie has a gift for finding the net, with elite shooting abilities, which is something that has added a ton of value to our team. We can count on her to bring positive energy and a team-first, unifying presence to all that she does. Thank you, Ronnie for all that you have done for our Cardinal program."
Haley Jolly
"Haley is the spark player everyone wishes she had. She is focused, determined, and persistent. She is also kind, funny and selfless. These are things that have allowed her to play a crucial role in pressure situations for BSUFH. She scored the opening goal for our conference victory against Longwood as a result of that. Haley is someone who will leave it all out there for her team. That example and impact has been invaluable to our culture and growth as a program. We are forever grateful to Haley for that."
Alison McMullen
"We are very lucky to have Alison as a Cardinal. The PA native has played in the hotbed of hockey and has always brought that level of professionalism and competition to our team. She is the epitome of selflessness. Alison is always there to help her teammates and our squad would not be where it is without her steady presence on and off the field. Her growth as a player has been a pleasure to watch—she is a workhorse who we will certainly miss."
Hillary Scott
"Hill is just what you want in a defender—stoic, calm, and steady. Her impact on our defensive corner unit is part of why it has become so stingy this season. Hill thrives on pressure and she has helped build that confidence into our entire team. She is the glue on our team in all ways—on and off the field. We will greatly miss her example and the wonderful person that she is. It's no surprise that her teammates elected her to a Vice Captain position, she is someone we all look up to tremendously."
Michelle Shampton
"Michelle is truly a special player—she is a natural leader, who has earned the respect of those around her, but is also one of the most approachable and kind people you will find. As a Vice Captain last year and Team Captain this year, she has led Ball State into a new era, pushing our culture forward with her example of servant leadership. She is a talented and dangerous attacker, and has forever left her mark on the Cardinals."
On the whole class:
"This is a class who has left its mark on Ball State Field hockey forever. They transformed the way the team works and prepares because they bought into our coaching staff's vision. They have been hungry to bring Ball State back to national prominence, and they have put action behind it. I am blessed to have led them for 2 years, and better for the time I have spent with them. This year has been really fun, because we have grown so close as a team. We hope to honor this group and keep battling as long as we can into November!"
