Cardinals Prevail 3-2 over Kent State in Physical Matchup
October 24, 2019 | Soccer
MUNCIE, Ind. – In what felt like a conference tournament atmosphere, the Ball State University soccer team survived a very physical contest to defeat Kent State, 3-2, Thursday night at Briner Sports Complex.
The Cardinals advanced to 13-4-0 for the year with the win and 7-2-0 in Mid-American Conference Play.
"I think it's good for us to face adversity in games like this because it gives us valuable experience," said BSU head coach Josh Rife. "Our girls battled through it. Good teams find ways to win even when they aren't playing their best, and we did that tonight. This will be a good reminder for us of what it feels like and takes to win games like this in a tournament setting."
Ball State couldn't have asked for a better start when it scored a goal off a corner kick that a Kent State defender headed into her own goal. Sam Kambol, who had two assists on the night, fed the ball into the box. The Cardinals quickly extended their lead with a goal of their own as Nicky Potts found the back of the net with a chip over the goalkeeper in the 15th minute. Kambol and Tatiana Hawkins-Dabney were credited with assists on the play.
Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Golden Flashes responded not long after with a goal in the 23rd minute to make it a one score game. The 2-1 score carried into halftime as Tristin Stuteville made some key saves to keep Ball State on top.
After ending the first half on its heels, Ball State came out of the break aggressive looking to restore its two-goal lead. The aggressiveness paid off when Kambol and Peighton Cook combined to find Lizzie Philibin for the game winner in the box on her second goal of the year in the 64th minute.
The match wasn't over yet though as Kent State kept up its attack and broke through in the 74th minute to once again make it a one-point game. The Golden Flashes had multiple opportunities to get an equalizer, but Stuteville stood strong and combined with the BSU back line to preserve the victory.
Kent State fired off 25 shots for the match with 16 on goal, but Stuteville came up clutch for the Cardinals and made 14 saves. Ball State produced 12 of its own shots and put seven on goal. The Cardinals also earned four corner kicks. Potts upped her team-leading point total to 16 for the year on her seventh goal.
Ball State has a few days to recover before it welcomes Ohio to Muncie for a 1 p.m. ET showdown on Sunday. The team is attempting to break the all-time attendance record for a soccer game at Ball State, and will be giving out free sun glasses and draw string backpacks to all in attendance. BSU students with a student ID will also get free pizza while supplies last.
