Cardinals Serve Their Way to 3-1, MIVA-Opening Win Over Ohio State
January 26, 2019 | Men's Volleyball
MUNCIE, Ind. – The Ball State University men's volleyball team compiled 10 service aces, including five from Parker Swartz, and went on to defeat No. 12 Ohio State in the opening MIVA contest of the season by a score of 3-1 at Worthen Arena on Saturday night.
The win pushed Ball State to .500 for the season and 1-0 in the MIVA with a 4-4 record while Ohio State fell to 3-4 and 0-1 in conference play.
The 10 service aces were the only major statistical category in which the Cardinals topped the Buckeyes, but it was enough to get the job done. Ball State combined for 38 kills while hitting .121, six blocks, 32 assists and 36 digs.
"Every MIVA match is important but the matches in your gym are extremely important," said head coach Joel Walton. "Even though we didn't start very well tonight, our guys got something going in game two and I was impressed with how they kept it going through the rest of the match to get us a big win."
Matt Szews led the Cardinals in kills on the night with 13 while Kaleb Jenness was right behing with 12. Jake Romano set the table from the setter position with 30 assists and Swartz and Lemuel Turner each had three blocks. Swartz's five aces were accompanied by two from Turner, and one from Szews, Jenness and Romano.
The Cardinals dug themselves in a hole early on in set one as Ohio State jumped out to a 5-0 lead. BSU claimed three-straight points after that but couldn't generate much offense as the Buckeyes went on to secure the game, 25-14.
Ohio State controlled set two early on and led by as much as four, but the Cardinals clawed back to tie the game at 16 apiece. Swartz took over from there as he led Ball State on an 8-0 run from the service line. Swartz tallied three aces during the sequence and the Buckeyes couldn't recover as BSU evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-20 win.
Set three was Ball State's turn to jump out to an early advantage. The Cardinals led by as many as six with a 13-7 advantage, but the Buckeyes wouldn't go away quietly. OSU trimmed the deficit to two at 22-20, but the Cardinals fought off the rally and went up 2-1 with a 25-22 game-three victory.
Looking to close out the match in four, BSU grabbed a 4-0 lead to start the game. The lead was extended to as much as eight, and the Cardinals appeared to be cruising toward an easy victory. Ohio State fought back though and eventually tied the set at 20 all. The teams traded the next few points but Ball State regained its composure and sealed the match on a kill by David Siebum.
After three matches in Worthen Arena, Ball State now hits the road to take on Harvard and Sacred Heart next weekend. Both matches are slated to begin at 7 p.m. ET.
