
Next Up For T&F, The Tom Hathaway Classic Starting Friday

MUNCIE, Ind.- - The Ball State track & field team continues its march to the 2019 Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships (Feb. 22-23) this weekend with a stop at UIndy for the Tom Hathaway Distance Classic.
Action in the two-day meet, which will be held at UIndy's Athletic Recreational Center, begins early Friday for the Cardinals, with freshman Karlie Zumbro competing in the pentathlon starting at 10:45 a.m.
Zumbro is looking to become the first Ball State student-athlete to complete the pentathlon since Rebecca Lomax placed fourth in the event at the 2015 MAC Indoor Championships.
The Cardinals are slated to compete in seven total events on Friday, concluding with the mile run at approximately 6:10 p.m. Ball State returns to the ARC for five more events Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. with the shot put.

No. 1: Ball State student-athletes lead the Mid-American Conference in the 60m hurdles (Jazmin Smith) and high jump (Regan Lewis), while holding down the No. 2 spot in the 60m (Peyton Stewart) and the No. 6 slot in the 800m (Karleigh Conner) and the 200m (Jazmin Smith),
In addition, the Cardinals have three student-athletes ranked in the Top 50 of the NCAA Rankings; 60m hurdles (Jazmin Smith, 24th), high jump (Regan Lewis, 28th) and 5000m (Maritza Rodriguez, 47th).

No. 2:Â Ball State enters the Tom Hathaway Distance Classic ranked 12th in the latest USTFCCCA Great Lakes Regional Rankings. It's the highest the Cardinals have been ranked in the region since before the 2008-09 season according to the USTFCCCA archives (Link).
Right now, the Cardinals are the fourth-highest ranked team from both the Mid-American Conference and the state of Indiana.

No. 3:Â Last weekend's 5,000m run was a breakout performance for junior distance specialist Maritza Rodriguez, whose time of 17:10.45 in the event was BSU's best time in the indoor 5,000m since the 2009 MAC Championships (Ali Bishel, 16:39.80).

Another breakout performance came from freshman Michelle Lehmann who turned in a career-best long jump of 5.59m. It's the best mark for a Ball State long jumper since the 2015 MAC Championships (Makelle Skelton, 5.88m).

Last Time at Tom Hathaway Classic – Feb. 16, 2014 (Recap)
It's been five seasons since the Cardinals have competed at the Tom Hathaway Classic, with the team sending just four student-athlete to the meet in 2014. All four of those competitors walked away with top-10 finishes, however, including a then-junior distance runner Courtney Edon who win the 5,000m run at 18:17.75.
