January 21, 2019 | Men's Basketball
Point guard became one of three active players with 1,500 points and 500 assists
MUNCIE, Ind. -- After averaging nearly 25 points per game last week and joining an exclusive club, Ball State point guard Tayler Persons was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week.
Â
The senior from Kokomo, Indiana, helped the Cardinals to a split of two league road games, including a win Saturday at MAC West Division leader Central Michigan.Â
Â
Persons went for 21 points in the CMU game, as the Cardinals dealt the Chippewas just their second home loss of the season. He surpassed 500 career assists in that game, becoming one of only three active Division I players in the country with at least 1,500 points and 500 assists. Marshall's Jon Elmore and Charlotte's Jon Davis are the others.
Â
Earlier in the week, Persons scored 28 points, grabbed a team-high nine rebounds and notched three steals at Bowling Green. The Cardinals came up one point short in a 79-78 loss to a Falcon team that remains unbeaten in league play.Â
Â
Persons shot 51.4 percent from the floor for the week (18-for-35). For the season, he ranks among the top five in the MAC in per-game scoring (17.1) and assists (4.7).
Â
Ball State (11-7, 2-3 MAC) returns to action Tuesday at Worthen Arena with a 7 p.m. tipoff against Miami.
